Behind the Photo

Fuzzy Death is named appropriately because that was the thought going through my mind as I was "shooting" this photo. A 300 mm lens does not do you much good when a  800 pound grizzly bear decides to charge you from 30 feet away. However when you are seeing life through a lens everything seems less dangerous even holding a camera makes me feel safer. This photo is proof of how ditzsy photographers are. Driving through Alaskan Denali state park I spotted this guy jumped out of the truck grabbed my D200 and ran towards him. I started shooting as fast as I could inching closer and closer it was perfect he kept getting bigger and bigger.....I stopped but he did not, great I thought better pictures. Then that little voice in the back of my head started quietly screaming run run run, it only got louder when my buddy in the truck  stared yelling it to. I finally took my eye off my lens and drifted back to reality. This reality was that 30 feet in front of me was a massive grizzly bear and 30 feet behind me was the truck so I ran and by the time I got to the front of the truck he was at the back. Not a relaxing experience but as a wildlife photographer with a small budget its one of the risks one must take. At least there was no harm done he brushed the back of the truck as I jumped in the passenger seat and I carried on shooting behind the flimsy steel door of the truck. The only thing worse than dealing with a bear coming at you I guess is an angery bride, I feel like I would rather face the bear again.
